Sunday evening, 1st May 2005: Registration at INGV in Palermo, Sicily; dinner.
Monday 2nd: Keynote papers; scientific sessions.
Tuesday 3rd: Course and technical demonstrations on UV and IR spectroscopy and soil CO2 monitoring systems; visit to the geochemical laboratory and geochemical data acquisition centre of INGV-Palermo.
Wednesday 4th ñ Thursday 5th: Transfer to Vulcano Island for field measurements including sampling and sensing of beach and crater fumaroles, soil emissions and summit plume. Leader Giorgio Capasso (INGV-PA). All field methods to be deployed (remote sensing and direct sampling). Possible sightseeing trip to Stromboli.
Friday 6th: The group splits as follows:
Direct sampling (DS): Transfer to Napoli (Campi Flegrei). Leader Giovanni Chiodini (INGV-OV)
Remote sensing (RS): Transfer to Nicolosi (Mt. Etna). Leader Mike Burton (INGV- CT)
Saturday 7th ñ Sunday 8th:
DS: measurements of Bocca Grande and other vents at Solfatara; ?visit to the monitoring network of INGV-OV.
RS: Remote measurements of Mt. Etnaís plume; visit to the INGV-PA network for monitoring CO2 soil degassing and water parameters and INGV-CT FTIR spectroscopy facility.
Afterwards: Independent groups may wish to continue field measurements in Italy, and/or Greece, e.g. Santorini.
