Fumarole Sampling
Momotombo:
Samples were collected at "Punto 9" by every group. This fumarole had a temperature of about 750°C.
Participants also collected additional samples at lower temperature spots.
Cerro Negro
Samples were collected from diffusely degassing areas. This location had a temperature of about 350C.
Poas
Two samples were collected from two locations. Both were low temperature (boiling) but had quite good gas flow.
Equipment:
One quartz tube for Momotombo (punto 9) and the titanium tubes for Cerro Negro and Poas were provided. Sufficient silicone tubing to connect to the sample bottles and cooling water was also provided by the organizers.
As always participants brought:
1) drinking water and food.
2) hard hat, gloves, protective gear, good sun hat, sun screen.
3) gas mask: full face and half face.
4) rain gear, jacket.
5) very good boots, especially for Momo and Poas.
For Momotombo we left at the crack of dawn (4 am). It was a 2.5 hour drive before the start of the ascend (about 5 hours).
